7 AI IEP goal generators compared — and the part none of them do

Short version: if you need a goal drafted, several free generators do that well — Varsity Tutors, Lernico, and Easy-Peasy will hand you a workable SMART goal in under two minutes. But a goal generator drafts one field of a document that has seven federally required components and a stack of state-specific rules. Drafting goals and making the whole IEP compliant are different jobs, and it's worth knowing which one you're buying.

The generators, honestly

What a goal generator can't tell you

Every tool above stops at the goal statement. None of them look at the rest of your document, which is where compliance findings actually live:

  • Whether the generated goal traces to a need in your present levels — a beautifully formatted goal with no matching PLAAFP data is still a finding.
  • Whether all seven required components of 34 CFR §300.320 are present and internally consistent — services with frequency/location/duration, nonparticipation justification, assessment accommodations, transition by 16.
  • Whether the document meets your state's added requirements, which sit on top of the federal floor and differ in all 50 states.
  • Whether generated text is even accurate — AI drafts invent criteria and baselines. Anything a generator writes still needs your data behind it (our guide to measurable IEP goals covers what has to be true of the finished goal).

Where CompliantIEP fits

CompliantIEP works on the opposite end of the pipeline. Instead of generating a goal from a prompt, you upload the IEP you already wrote; it checks the document against your state's requirements and returns a compliant, cited, updated version you can print. It's $7.99/month. If your bottleneck is drafting goal language, use one of the free generators above. If your bottleneck is the annual-review pile and the fear of a file review — that's the job it was built for. Run the result against our IEP compliance checklist either way; no tool replaces the IEP team's judgment.
